On the Subject of Scripts
Posted by on June 22, 2003

I need to insert a bit of a disclaimer about the scripts. Drew writes almost all of them. Occasionally youll see some stuff thats 100% my own. You can generally tell because it makes no sense (case in point: #2 and #3, the janitor ones). Ill give the same excuse for all of them: they sounded good at the time. And if you like them, well, woo, score one for me.

Although Drew writes almost all of them, very few survive the process in their original form. Some changes are small, a few are large. Drew may argue that point, and Id trust him more than me, as its his stuff Im chopping up. Usually its just because Im trying to cut out needless panels or clutter, or I have an idea for pictures that would fit it better. It borders on laziness, but I tell myself its so I can meet deadlines without driving my pencil through my aorta. However, I try to keep the scripts intact, at least so that they retain the original purpose.

So somewhere between the perfectly intact scripts, the somewhat cut down scripts, and my own original scripts, you get abominations like todays. I want to make it perfectly clear that Drew didn't write this. I really have no idea where this came from. Looking at it now, I think it was a sort of subconscious procrastination. I have enough trouble drawing Becca in her normal clothes, let alone a little black dress with some sort of formalish hair. Sometimes the pencils look good, but those rarely survive the inking (Ill talk about inking some other day). So here we have a case where Poes actually avoiding looking at Becca, just to get me a few more days before Becca jumps out. Great. Now Ive got your expectations up too. Bleh.

Confused? Read from the beginning. It won't help you understand anything, but at least you'll have read all of them. I'd definitely appreciate any feed back, so

*Update*
Hmm, so apparently Internet Explorer doesn't like some changes to the site. This may be the first time I've seen Opera succeed where IE failed. Anyway, hopefully we can fix this soon. I say "we," but Dan's the only one here who knows what to do. Until then, I personally recommend Opera. Actually, I recommend Opera for everything after that too.

Rant of Drew (3rd time's the charm!)
Posted by on June 22nd, 2003

OK, third rant, let's hope I get this one right.

So, as scripts go, I write a lot of stuff that isn't funny. Occasionally, I write some good stuff, and have some good ideas, but I go through an entire 100 page notebook and usually only keep about 10 pages of scripts and throw the rest out. Some of it isn't funny. Some is too personal. Some is not personal enough. And a whole lot is just doodles and doesn't make sense. But the stuff that survives slowly takes form in this final notebook I've slowly been filling for a while. But what I send to Mike still has to pass the form of the comic. I can write scripts, but I'm still unsure of how to fit them in a comic strip myself. So, a lot of what he does is modify/mix-up things so that they fit in the comic, and they are actually entertaining within the medium. So yeah, the plots are all mine mostly, the ideas are mine(mostly, see Mike's point above), but they all go through Mike's head and hands first(and I'm glad they do, cause sometimes they're just not good enough).

Its cool though, seeing a story that I imagined coming to life, and its getting cooler every day.

W00t n junk.

184. Video: Edith and I are up late studying for midterms watching crazy German music videos from the 90s. I'll miss college.
183. Video: Edith, the darling lass pictured above, will be performing this later this semester. I'm not sure what the protocol is when you find out your girlfriend is a zombie, but I guess I'm glad to have advanced warning that she'll be eating my brains at some point.
182. Video: Women in Western Art. Pretty niftay.
181. Comic: Copper is updating again! Glee!
180. Japanese Insanity Guitar Bear Pink Japan: WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?WHAT?
179. Video: Pac Man invasion. Old, I guess, but still required viewing.
178. Comic: Piled Higher and Deeper: So awesome! Also makes me not want to go to gradschool. Though, it worked out for my dad anyway, so who knows.
177. Artist: JF Bruckner: Oh yeah, jfb is awesome too! Right, right, more artists and comics, I forget so easily...
176. Comic: Copper: Copper is my favorite webcomic. Every strip is inspiringly beautiful and bursting with imagination, but beyond that, they consistently resonate with profundity without screaming "Look at ME, aren't I profound!?" I tried to write a lot more corny praise, but just go read all of them instead, you won't be sorry. I was hoping to wait for Kazu Kibuishi to get back to it so I could scream about its return, but it's been quite a while already, so I'll just link it again once that happens.
175. Artist: Mitsui. Life must be hard when you're this awesome. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
174. Comic: The Unfeasible Adventures of Beaver and Steve. I don't actually read this often, but the toaster knob makes me want to. That sentence will make no sense as soon as they update.
173. Humor: Kyle linked me to this, but I can't imagine why. P.S. Kyle sucks.
172. Comic: Socks. Okay, Socks is also amazing. I need to read through both these soon. Yargh.
171. Comic: Minus. Leo just linked me to minus, and it is aggggghjustgoreaditIcan'tthinkofwhattowriteitisamazing.
170. Flash Game: Fancy Pants. Fancy Pants!!! Made me want to drop everything and make an awesome speedy platformer with simple but incredibly smooth smooth animation with my roommates. Who knows what they'd do, but Kyle already agreed to it. Right Kyle? Study for your midterms to signify "yes."
169. Random: Revenge of Zoom Quilt.
168. Comic: Sinfest. How could you not know about Sinfest already? :|
167. Apps: doPdf. People keep asking how to write out pdfs. If you don't own Acrobat Pro, apparently this works.
166. Humor: Then Japan puts Berkeley to shame in the flash mob arena. But c'mon, it's Japan, it's probably weird when stuff like that doesn't happen.
165. Humor: Berkeley ninja flash mob battle royale round 1 fight.
